SIENA, THE FLOOR OF THE DUOMO
The floor of the Duomo of Siena is a unique artwork. It’s a huge marble and stone carpet that covers the entire surface of the church. Giorgio Vasari defined it “the most beautiful, largest and most magnificent floor that ever was made”. The floor is completely uncovered for two months a year (from August 18th till the last Sunday in October) and therefore it is possible to admire it as a whole.
During the time of its uncovering it is possible to carry out a special itinerary focusing on the floor to understand the central idea connecting all the scenes and that from the entrance of the church leads the faithful to the main altar.
